Do you have the ultimate American Dream? As a sailor aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), Christoph K. Ankuvie recently had the story of his journey from Ghana in West Africa to the United States published in a book called “A Journey to the United States of America.” The book discussed my life from childhood in a village in Togo as well as in Ghana to coming to the United States to realizing the Great American Dream.

I was the eighth out of 12 children of my father who was a cocoa farmer and believed in the old adage, “Spare the rod, Spoil the child.” My brothers, sisters, and I were required to assist our father on the farm in order to go to school. By so doing, we learnt fast that listening and respecting those around us would provide the support network we needed.

I believe that there are many people out there that share similar circumstances to the ones I have gone through so far in my lifetime, and that is what stands at the core of my book. Ankuvie equally says he hopes readers will look at his experiences and be inspired to persevere through their own hardships, viewing them as the foundation for a stronger future.

My book therefore tells the story of my life from my humble beginnings in an African village with no electricity or phone to my current work as a Culinary Specialist Second Class in the United States Navy.
